Solus is celebrating a major milestone in 2020 as the company marks its 25th year of supplying inspirational and innovative tiles to the architectural specification industry.
The Birmingham-based business has gone from strength to strength since its inception in 1995 when Chairman Peter Bentley launched the fledgling company in his home office.
Solus is now one of the UK’s leading providers of high-quality floor and wall tiles.
The company has grown rapidly from just three employees when it established its first office on York Road, Hall Green, to 20 members of staff when it relocated to Seeley’s Road, Tyseley, in 2003.
It now boasts a 112-strong team, based at its head office on Cole River Park, its flagship showroom in Clerkenwell and throughout the UK.
The growth in employee numbers has mirrored the impressive increase in turnover, which has seen a rapid rise from £10 million in 2012 to just over £21 million in 2019.
Managing Director Marcus Bentley said: “Our vision has always been to be recognised as the trusted market leader of tiling solutions to the specification industry and that aim remains the same to this day.
“We are continuously striving to further our journey of growth and are rightly proud of our achievements in terms of expansion, which has been made possible by offering architects and interior designers the latest on-trend products, investing in the latest technologies, infrastructure and, importantly, our staff.
“Our showroom has also been integral to our success story, showcasing the most innovative and inspirational products right in the heart of Clerkenwell. This facility has helped us to elevate our profile and brand and will play a key role in the future of the business, ensuring Solus is firmly on the map for professionals in the architectural specification industry.”
The company has also significantly extended its offering, launching Engineered Hardwood Flooring, Organic Flooring and Luxury Vinyl Tile ranges, for which a dedicated team has been recruited.
A strong emphasis will be placed on international sales in the future, building on the firm foundations that the business has already laid in securing contracts with high-profile companies worldwide.
Marcus added: “We have achieved so many milestones in the past 25 years, all of which have contributed to the strong position we are now in, from our first commercial premises to reaching a £1 million turnover in 1999 and opening our current 42,000sqft purpose-built facility with office and warehouse space.
“We have weathered the storms of economic uncertainty, recessions and competition and have not only survived but have thrived. As we enter the next chapter in our story, we will stand by the core values of our business – to take pride in what we do, to be ambitious, adaptable and energetic in our approach, to offer our expertise and work as a united team to provide the best possible service to our customers. These values are the foundations that Solus was built on and they have served us well so far.”
