Solus hosts showcase of Celtic tradition combined with contemporary style

20th February 2020

A dynamic range of tiles which combines Celtic tradition with contemporary style is set to be officially launched at Solus’ Clerkenwell Showroom.

Designer Gordon Byrne was influenced by his Irish roots when he created the monochrome Brigid’s Cross tile at his London-based practice, Studio GBD.

Highly versatile, the tile can be used in its original format or mixed to create unique and eye-catching combinations.

The design forms part of Gordon’s Heritage Collection which features modern yet distinctly Irish furniture and objects including the acclaimed Hurley Table.

The tile range will be displayed, alongside a stool and table composed of the tiles and a metal version of the stool, at a special exhibition running from March 12 to March 21 with an official launch party taking place from 6pm-9pm on the opening night.

The striking design was inspired by St Brigid, born in Dundalk in 450 AD, who is believed to have woven the cross as she sat at the bedside of a dying pagan Chieftain.

The sick man is said to have been so enthralled by her weaving that he converted and was baptised shortly before he passed away.

Thought to protect homes from harm, the cross, made using rushes, can still be found hanging above doorways and windows in Ireland on the feast day of St Brigid.

Gordon said: “The Heritage Collection is a reflection of the rich history of Ireland, where creativity and innovation run deep. The Brigid Cross tile embodies a Celtic tradition that the people of Ireland have embraced for centuries and which is ingrained in their culture.

“I am passionate about taking indigenous artefacts and re-contextualising them in a modern way to create new pieces for contemporary spaces – the Brigid Cross tile embodies this ethos.

“Solus’ award-winning Clerkenwell Showroom is the perfect venue to host the launch and I am delighted to be working with the team on this exciting project.”

Solus’ Commercial and Marketing Director Stephen Baker added: “As one of the UK’s leading tile suppliers, we are always looking for inspirational and exciting new compositions that will appeal to interior designers and architects.

“The Brigid Cross tile not only has a strong aesthetic appeal it also has a captivating story. As a member of the Clerkenwell community, we are pleased to be able to provide a showcase for this inspirational design.”
