Sons and Daughters is a gourmet sandwich shop that operates during the day and night with slightly different emphases of use. It is located in Coal Drops Yard, a former Victorian coal distribution facility that was transformed into a retail space in 2014 by Heatherwick Studios.

Outcome
The Sons and Daughters King’s Cross restaurant is a grab and go, daytime retail space that transforms to a dining in experience in the evening. The designers wanted the space to acknowledge Sons and Daughters branding as well as the industrial aesthetic of the Coal Drops Yard site. The space also references American diners without straying into theme restaurant territory.
The palette is neutral with drama achieved through layering. This is particularly apparent in the tiled floor which echoes the light oak, ash steel and sooty iron found elsewhere in the design. Initially, the designers looked at a terrazzo tile to achieve this echoing, but it did not fit the budget.
In consultation with our area sales manager, the designers then selected tiles from our Porcelain Flair range. These are suitable for floor use in a high-footfall area. A special point of interest in this project is that Solus cut the tiles for the designer so that an aesthetically pleasing three-dimensional trompe-l’œil could be achieved.
Whilst a slightly more challenging fit for the tiling contractor, the finished effect is well worth the effort. A great example of what can be achieved with quite simple, cost-effective materials and the timely advice and support of the Solus team.
