Description

Winchelsea Road proves that tiles can be used on the exterior as well as the interior of buildings. Bold primary coloured tiles were chosen to create a woven texture, to create a real talking point in the neighbourhood.

Outcome

Alain Court on Winchelsea Road in the Borough of Brent is a sustainable housing initiative, offering more than 30 flats for homeless families, residential care and part ownership purposes.

The development, which was awarded the Ecosite Label sustainable development award, has been finished with a striking four-colour exterior tile design which envelops the building on four sides.

The architects, Shepheard Epstein Hunter, chose the dynamic Modular range- an expansive series of fully vitrified, weather withstanding ceramic wall tiles with more than 50 vivid and vibrant colours and shades available.

Shepheard Epstein Hunter said: “A mix of render and coloured tiles were used to make a building that fits in with its neighbours but has a distinctive identity.”

The red tile takes prominence in the design of the building and makes for a distinctive focal point. The tiles cover a total of 300m2 over four high level floors and were fixed to the specified pattern with the assistance of scaffolding and mobile cherry pickers.
