Introducing Megan Mulkerrins, Specification Design Manager

20th January 2023

We’ve built an amazing team at Solus, and we’d like to introduce you to the people that make it all happen. This is the first in a series of posts that link to conversations with our movers and shakers.

Megan joined us last year as a Specification Design Manager, a role that combines design consultation and commercial support. Her degree in Interior Architecture and Design means she speaks the same professional language as her clients, making communication efficient and easy.

Megan has a passion for all things interiors, whether it’s upcycling furniture in her spare time or helping architects and designers bring their vision to life in delivering large scale projects.

We asked Megan a few questions to help you get to know her better.

Tell us a bit about your background.

I’ve always had a passion for architecture and design. I spent a lot of time hunting through antiques market in my teens looking for furniture to upcycle and repurpose.

I studied Interior Architecture at the University of Creative Arts making me a fellow alumnus of Tracey Emin, Karen Millen, and Zandra Rhodes! It was an amazing experience to be amongst such creativity and it was there I realised I could have a career in design.

How did you end up doing what you’re doing now?

I started working in my last year of university with a ceramics company. I reasoned it would be a good place to start given my intention to work within the sector.

There, I collaborated with architects and designers across multiple projects simultaneously, which allowed me to experience the processes involved in bringing a design vision to life.

I enjoyed bringing my design knowledge to the specification conversation which I think has driven my success to date.

What changes do you think the industry will see over the coming years?

Clients are more conscious of their decisions; they don’t specify materials based solely on aesthetics. They want to know where the materials are sourced and how they are manufactured. There is a demand for more transparency, honesty, and information in the industry. As suppliers, it is our responsibility to provide this information, to allow for more informed choices.

Secondly, I hope the industry has more women in prominent and influential positions and greater recognition for those who have already been doing great work.

What inspires / motivates you?

I am always inspired by the creativity of the architects I get to collaborate with. Seeing their designs come to life and knowing we have played a part in supporting their vision is very rewarding. I’m also motivated to keep up to date with the latest design trends so I can provide the most innovative products to the A&D community.

What’s the best advice you’ve ever been given?

It’s better to ask for forgiveness than permission!

What are you most excited about at Solus?

There are lots of things I am excited about at Solus. I’m really looking forward to seeing our re-imagined showroom space open in a few months and hosting more events! Last year’s series of Solus Sessions was amazing.
